LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery meant to rectify difficulties with eyesight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and a corneal map is created. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism & other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is carried out with the person awake and alert, even so, the person is generally given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, clinical studies have not completely determined long-term complicating problems. The eye surgery cannot be reversed.
