LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery intended to correct or lessen problems with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferable to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This procedure also picks up astigmatism as well as other problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to judge the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed while the person is awake, all the same, the patient is typically given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications do occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research studies have not proven long-term complications or damage. The procedure is irreversible.
