LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery intended to minimize or repair issues with sight. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is generally preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is devised. This process also picks up astigmatism or other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to calculate the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is carried out with the patient awake, however, the patient is usually given a mild sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, scientists have not characterized long-term damaging complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
