LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to repair disorders with eyesight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye problems. LASIK is typically preferable to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This procedure also detects astigmatism & additional peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to ascertain the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is done while the person is awake and functional, but, the person is generally given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications could occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A number of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research studies have not proven long-term or permanent damage. The surgery is irreversible.
