LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye designed to fix difficulties with vision. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism as well as additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to find out the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed while the patient is awake and alert, even so, the patient is often given a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications can occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap that was created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research has not defined long-term complicating problems. The eye surgery is irreversible.
