LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye designed to cure or improve problems with eyesight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and a corneal map is created. This process also picks up astigmatism and other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to judge the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed while the patient is awake and functional, even so, the patient is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications do occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, clinical studies have not completely defined long-term complications. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
