LASIK is a type of laser eye operation which is intended to rectify problems with eyesight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This procedure also discovers astigmatism and additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed with the patient awake, nevertheless, the patient is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, scientists have not completely determined long-term or permanent damage. The lASIK procedure cannot be reversed.
