LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye designed to correct or at least minimize troubles with sight. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the process also spots astigmatism as well as additional problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed with the person awake, but, the person is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage can occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research studies have not completely determined long-term complications or damage. The procedure can't be reversed.
