LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye intended to correct troubles with vision. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism and also other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to determine the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed while the person is awake, however, the patient is generally given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, scientists have not characterized long-term complications or damage. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
