LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye designed to improve difficulties with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism and additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to compute the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done with the patient awake and functional, but, the patient is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or laser. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems could occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not proven long-term complicating problems. The surgery can't be reversed.
