LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery designed to rectify troubles with vision. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and a map of the cornea is made. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. A few of of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not determined long-term complicating problems. The process cannot be reversed.
