LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye which is intended to correct or lessen problems with sight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is typically preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This process also detects astigmatism or other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to compute the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and functional, even so, the patient is usually given a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, scientists have not completely defined long-term or permanent damage. The surgery can't be reversed.
