LASIK is a type of laser surgery to the eye meant to improve or correct issues with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is ordinarily preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism and other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed with the patient awake and alert, still, the person is usually given a mild sedative and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications can occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, studies have not characterized long-term complicating problems. The procedure can't be reversed.
