LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye operation which is intended to rectify problems with eyesight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This procedure also picks up astigmatism as well as additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is carried out with the person awake and functional, but, the patient is often given a modest sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, scientists have not defined long-term complications or damage. The process is irreversible.
