LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to repair issues with sight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the procedure also discovers astigmatism and other deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is carried out while the person is awake and alert, but, the patient is usually given a mild sedating drug and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications do occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A number of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research has not ascertained long-term complications. The surgery is irreversible.
