LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery which is intended to cure or improve problems with eyesight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism or additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to ascertain the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is performed while the person is awake, all the same, the patient is often given a modest sedative and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, studies have not defined long-term or permanent complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
