LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery which is intended to rectify issues with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This process also detects astigmatism & other problems in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to find out the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed with the patient awake and functional, but, the person is usually given a minor sedating drug and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications do occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not ascertained long-term or permanent complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
