LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye surgery meant to correct disorders with vision. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism or other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out while the person is awake and alert, nevertheless, the person is usually given a mild sedating medication and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not characterized long-term damaging complications. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
