LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery designed to rectify difficulties with sight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is commonly preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the process also detects astigmatism and additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to determine the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done with the person awake and alert, but, the person is typically given a minor sedating medication and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, scientists have not determined long-term or permanent complications. The procedure is irreversible.
