LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery meant to rectify issues with vision. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism or other problems in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to judge the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not completely determined long-term complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
