LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation designed to cure or improve problems with sight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism & other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and functional, all the same, the patient is generally given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, studies have not ascertained long-term complications or damage. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
