LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery which is intended to minimize or repair troubles with eyesight. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also picks up astigmatism & other deviations in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to determine the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out with the person awake and functional, however, the person is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications might occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not defined long-term complications. The process cannot be reversed.
