LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye designed to improve disorders with sight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is devised. This step of the process also detects astigmatism or other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done with the patient awake and alert, but, the person is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage could occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not completely determined long-term complicating problems. The eye surgery is irreversible.
