LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye designed to fix troubles with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to compute the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is carried out while the patient is awake, however, the person is often given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic drops for the eyes. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage or injury. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not ascertained long-term complicating problems. The procedure cannot be reversed.
