LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye intended to rectify problems with vision. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This procedure also picks up astigmatism & other problems in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done while the person is awake, but, the person is generally given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage. Although usually uncommon, complications do occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research has not determined long-term damaging complications. The process can't be reversed.
