LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye intended to minimize or repair difficulties with vision. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is ordinarily preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This process also detects astigmatism as well as other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to judge the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed while the person is awake, nonetheless, the patient is typically given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops.
