LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery designed to correct issues with eyesight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This stage of the process also picks up astigmatism and other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and alert, however, the person is typically given a modest sedative and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research studies have not defined long-term complications. The procedure can't be reversed.
