LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye meant to fix difficulties with vision. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This procedure also picks up astigmatism & additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to judge the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is done while the patient is awake and alert, even so, the patient is often given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not completely determined long-term complications or damage. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
