LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery meant to improve or correct disorders with vision. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism and other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to calculate the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is done with the patient awake and functional, nonetheless, the person is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating damage. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries.
