LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye surgery designed to improve issues with sight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. The operating surgeon uses this data to determine the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake and alert, still, the person is often given a minor sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage can occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. A number of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research has not ascertained long-term damaging complications. The process cannot be reversed.
