LASIK is a type of laser-guided surgery to the eye intended to correct difficulties with vision. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is ordinarily preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This process also discovers astigmatism & other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is done with the person awake and functional, however, the patient is usually given a modest sedating agent and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, complications do occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not completely determined long-term complications. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
