LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye meant to improve disorders with eyesight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and a corneal map is created. This procedure also picks up astigmatism or additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to compute the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake, even so, the patient is usually given a modest sedating drug and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications can occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not defined long-term or permanent damage. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
