LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye intended to remedy difficulties with sight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the process also picks up astigmatism as well as other deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to compute the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out with the person awake, all the same, the patient is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, studies have not determined long-term damaging complications. The surgery can't be reversed.
