LASIK is a type of laser surgery to the eye meant to correct or at least minimize issues with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism and also additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to judge the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed while the person is awake and alert, however, the person is generally given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, scientists have not proven long-term complications or damage. The surgery is irreversible.
