LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye intended to cure or improve disorders with vision. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferred to pRK surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This procedure also picks up astigmatism & other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to ascertain the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is done with the person awake and functional, all the same, the patient is usually given a minor sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, scientists have not proven long-term or permanent complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
