LASIK is a form of laser eye operation meant to minimize or repair troubles with vision. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the process also spots astigmatism as well as additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to compute the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done while the patient is awake and functional, even so, the person is typically given a minor sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems can occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research has not ascertained long-term damaging complications. The process is irreversible.
