LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye meant to improve or correct problems with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism and also other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to judge the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done with the patient awake, however, the person is typically given a modest sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, scientists have not characterized long-term complications. The procedure is irreversible.
