LASIK is a type of laser-guided surgery to the eye designed to remedy disorders with sight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This procedure also picks up astigmatism & additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is carried out while the person is awake, all the same, the person is generally given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not determined long-term complications. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
