LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye meant to minimize or repair difficulties with sight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the process also spots astigmatism and additional peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out with the person awake and alert, even so, the person is usually given a minor sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications might occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not completely defined long-term complications. The surgery can't be reversed.
