LASIK is a form of laser eye operation which is intended to remedy problems with vision. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This process also picks up astigmatism or other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is performed with the patient awake, all the same, the patient is typically given a minor sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A few of of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, clinical studies have not defined long-term complications or damage. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
