LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery intended to rectify problems with eyesight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is generally preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is created. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism and also additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems might occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just a few of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not characterized long-term complications or damage. The process is irreversible.
