LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye surgery designed to cure or improve problems with sight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanner and a map of the cornea is made.
