LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation which is intended to correct or lessen troubles with eyesight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism & other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to find out the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake, all the same, the patient is often given a minor sedating agent and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not completely defined long-term or permanent complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
