LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to correct or lessen troubles with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is typically preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This step of the process also discovers astigmatism & other deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to judge the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and functional, however, the person is often given a mild sedating medication and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not characterized long-term complications or damage. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
