LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye meant to improve disorders with eyesight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically preferable to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This stage of the process also discovers astigmatism and other problems in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is carried out while the patient is awake and functional, but, the person is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems can occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research studies have not proven long-term complicating problems. The process is irreversible.
