LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery designed to repair issues with sight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and a corneal map is created. This process also picks up astigmatism & additional peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done with the patient awake, even so, the patient is generally given a minor sedative and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, clinical studies have not proven long-term complications or damage. The process cannot be reversed.
