LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery intended to fix problems with sight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not completely defined long-term damaging complications. The procedure can't be reversed.
