LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye intended to repair disorders with eyesight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism and other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is performed with the person awake and alert, but, the patient is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications could occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not characterized long-term or permanent damage. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
