LASIK is a type of laser eye operation meant to correct or at least minimize problems with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism & additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is performed while the person is awake, however, the person is typically given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications might occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, scientists have not defined long-term or permanent damage. The surgery can't be reversed.
