LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation intended to improve or correct disorders with sight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to pRK surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is devised. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism as well as other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to compute the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and alert, even so, the patient is often given a minor sedative and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not completely determined long-term or permanent complications. The procedure cannot be reversed.
